X-ECUTIONERS VS. DA BEATMINERZ SHOWCASE

The X-Ecutioners vs. Da Beatminerz
Two Iconic and Influential Hip Hop Crews Join Forces for a Memorable Showcase

January 31, 2012- New York, NY:  The X-Ecutioners and Beatminerz have announced that they are partnering for a once in a lifetime showcase.  The event will highlight the key members in each legendary crew, and will even feature a few very special guest MCs doing short, but memorable cameos.

The upcoming showcase, which will take place at New York City’s Highline Ballroom on Sunday, February 12th, 2012, will be a unique celebration dedicated to two of New York City’s groundbreaking Hip Hop collectives; The X-Ecutioners for their innovative, trailblazing turntablism and Da Beatminerz for their production of some of the greatest songs and albums in Hip Hop history.

Mr. Walt and DJ Evil Dee of the super-producer team Da Beatminerz have devoted their expertise as producers, DJs, and radio personalities to the music industry professionally since 1992. The two are the geniuses behind Enta da Stage (1993), Black Moon’s introduction album, Smif-N-Wessun’s debut album Dah Shinin’ (1995), and singles for artists such as Naughty by Nature, Black Star, Eminem, and Busta Rhymes, just to name a few.

The world-renowned turntablists formerly known as the X-Men officially became the X-Ecutioners when they made the leap from being battle DJs to recording artists in their own right. Founded in 1989, The X-Ecutioners have included Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Total Eclipse, Boogie Blind, DJ Precision, and more, and are among a select handful of DJs who spearheaded the turntablist movement by taking the classic hip-hop techniques of mixing and cutting into a whole new realm of musical improvisation, working with a host of prominent artists in the process.

FACEBOOK IPO COULD HELP SOCIAL GIANT CHALLENGE GOOGLE

Facebook is girding for an IPO filing Feb. 1, setting it up for more intense competition with online ad and search giant Google in 2012.
Buzz that Facebook will file for an initial public offering (IPO) Feb. 1 has marketing and advertising experts expecting the social network to challenge Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) at a time when the search giant is trying to ramp up its own ad targeting efforts.
While Google has commanded the market for search advertising for a decade, the company hasn't made the headway it would like in display advertising.

That's where Facebook is cruising, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited comScore stats that the world's leading social network enjoys 28 percent display ad market share, up from 21 percent the previous year. Google has less than 5 percent market share.
Yet some marketing analysts claim Facebook has yet to tap its large potential in generating dollars from all of its millions of installed Like buttons. The company's 2011 ad revenues are estimated to be in the range of $4 billion, compared with $40 billion for Google. An IPO will bring an infusion of cash, positioning Facebook for some crucial strategic investments in the United States and abroad, where the bulk of its user base of 800 million people exists.
Forrester Research analyst Nate Elliott said that despite claiming 96 of the top U.S. 100 advertisers, most large brand marketers have told him they haven't gotten much value from their ad investments on Facebook. Moreover, user engagement on branded pages is declining for a company that researcher Nielsen said commands 7 hours of user engagement per person per month.
"Facebook can—and must—do much more to turn the data it has on users into effective ad targeting," Elliott wrote in blog post Jan. 31. "And it must build or buy much better tools for building, managing and measuring branded pages."
Elliott noted Facebook would benefit from buying a demand-side ad platform—Google acquired Invite Media in 2011—as well as social analytics and marketing companies that could help Facebook monetize branded pages. Facebook could use these assets to bulk up ad targeting on its own properties, as well as to those all over the Web.
Elliott isn't the first analyst or pundit to suggest this. Search expert John Battelle has long suggested Facebook might build a "FaceSense" third-party ad platform to rival Google's own AdSense platform.
However, Elliott went further, arguing that he expects Facebook to compete with Google on targeted ads in the next two years. "If they're not competing with Google in this space—if Google walks away with this opportunity unopposed, as it currently looks could happen—then Facebook will have missed its single biggest revenue opportunity."
Meanwhile, Google isn't idling at the curb. The company's Google+ social network, its answer to Facebook's worldwide social media domination, won't be mistaken for Facebook today.
Even so, it's got a growing user base and is becoming increasingly intertwined with Google's existing Web services.
Google appears to be positioning Google+ and its Web services for better ad targeting. The company recently said it will unify its privacy policies, allowing user data from individual user accounts to be shared across several Web services. Ideally, Google will be able to leverage this approach for better ad targeting.
Facebook's emergence as a player on the public market should, at the least, make the advertising and branding market more interesting.

IF TERRELL OWENS THINKS HE'S IN HELL IMAGINE HOW HIS KIDS FEEL

By Denene Millner

Post image for If Terrell Owens Thinks He’s “In Hell,” Imagine How His Kids Feel
I’m no Terrell Owens fan and I have no interest in kicking a brother when he’s down, but the former NFL wide receiver known as T.O. isn’t winning any points after revealing in this month’s GQ cover story that after earning about $80 million during his career as a football player, he’s now broke, impossibly unemployed and being sued by four different women who bore children he fathered but has no relationship with. The story, “Love Me, Hate Me, Just Don’t Ignore Me,” details Terrell’s tragic crash and burn on and off the field, and takes great pains to lay out why the “T.O. Show” Reality TV star may be the most misunderstood dude on the planet—lulling readers into a “maybe this guy isn’t so bad after all” love fest until it gets to the part where Terrell tries to explain why he’s never met his youngest child, a 5-year-old, has a fractured relationship with the older three, and thinks the mothers of his children are out to get him. From the story, by writer Nancy Hass:

Friends may not be calling, or teams, but lawyers, a slew of them, definitely have him on speed dial. Especially those who represent the four women to whom he pays a total of $44,600 a month in child support for his four children, ages 5 to 12: “If there’s anything I’m sorry about, it’s getting involved with all that.” He never actually dated any of the women, he says. One was a one-night stand, the others “repeat offenders.” Owens, who has never been married, concedes he is “not a very good judge of character.” Still, he “never suspected they were the types to do what they done in the past year.”
Last summer, when the money started to dry up for real and the extent of his financial disaster became clear, he reduced the amount he paid to each of the women. Three of them sued him. When he failed to show up for a court date with the mother of his oldest child, Tariq, because it conflicted with his public tryout, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. “She wouldn’t reschedule,” he says, his hands reaching out unconsciously as if strangling an imaginary neck. “She’d pressed me in a deposition about if I intended to try to get on another team, but then when I do the workout, do what I can to get work, this is what she does.”
Now he is in court with all four women, whom he lumps together like one big bloodsucking blob. None of them are being fair, he says: “They know I’m not working; they know the deal.” Although he never established regular visitation with any of the children through the courts, he says he sees the eldest three as much as he can when their mothers allow it. So bitter is his relationship with the mother of the youngest child, a son, that he has never met the boy.
*insert image of Denene making dead fish eyes here*
Okay, I’m sorry: this man is the poster freakin’ child for men who carelessly spend, yap and lay without giving a second’s thought about the repercussions—how their actions will affect people beyond the five seconds of thought they put into the madness they create with their careless antics. It’s one thing to watch “The T.O. Show” and see him running through women, saying all kinds of sexist crap to his assistants, Kita and Moe, crying in his mother’s arms about how his friends stole his money and pouring out his heart over how, at 38, he’s still devastated by the fact that he had no relationship with his father, who lived with his wife and children just across the street from the then-young and fatherless T.O. Grown folk can take the shenanigans for what it is and keep it moving.
But what about these babies? How do you recognize and acknowledge the pathology your father wrought and turn around and visit it on your own seeds? Better yet, how do you lay down with not one, not two, not three, but four women you barely know and don’t give a rat’s booty about, and put yourself in the position of having to care for them and the children you made with them into perpetuity—no matter if you’re a millionaire or a broke, unemployed, former football star?
If Terrell “I’m In Hell” Owens is not a textbook case for why we need to talk to our sons about their responsibility to plan their own reproduction—to be present participants in deciding when and with whom they’ll have a baby and the consequences and responsibilities that come with doing such—I don’t know who is.

WOMAN GETS 8 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SAYING BLACK MEN KIDNAPPED HER!

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World

You may remember Bonnie Sweeten out of Philadelphia from about a year ago.  Sweeten is the woman who made a fake call to police from the trunk of a Cadillac, claiming that she’d been kidnapped along with her daughter.  The truth?  They’d actually taken a trip to Disneyland.
A judge put an end to Sweeten’s antics, at least for a while.  She has been sentenced to 100 months in federal prison, equivalent to eight years, four months.   U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn Jr. made things very clear for Sweeten.
“You’ve done great wrong, and you have to pay the price,” Yohn said. Yohn called Sweeten a “master con woman,” and guessed that she’d committed 2,000 acts of fraud over a five year period.
“I’m very ashamed of myself,” Sweeten said.
Sweeten’s actions not only initiated an unnecessary manhunt for innocent black men, she also stole over a million dollars between 2004 and 2009.  Roughly $640,000 was taken out of law firm accounts, and another $280,000 was taken from the account of an elderly relative.  She forged a drivers license, court order and passport, and also convinced her second husband that she’d graduated from law school.
Sweeten was finally caught in 2009 when she spent money on an expensive house, car and in-vitro fertilization.
There isn’t much to say about Bonnie Sweeten other than the fact that she is clearly a sociopath.  It’s hard to imagine that she has any remorse for the harm she’s caused her human beings, and it’s very difficult to feel sorry for her.   What’s also interesting is that Sweeten the con artist was smart enough to know that she lives in a society where it’s easy to convince others that a black man did something harmful to her.  She’s not the first, nor the last, person to make such a claim.
Sweeten’s actions are a reminder of the collective image problem shared by black men all throughout America, as media continues to portray us as entertainers, athletes and criminals.  This misrepresentation spills over to impact law-abiding, normal, hard-working black Men who rarely stand a chance when compared with the presumed innocence of kind, sweet-looking white women.  When it was all said and done, Bonnie Sweeten, the con artist, was able to use America’s racially-biased perceptions against it.  I shudder to think about how many innocent black Men throughout history have served long prison sentences because of the lies of all the Bonnie Sweetens of history.
While there is plenty of reason to be angry at what happened in the Bonnie Sweeten case, there are also plenty of reasons to celebrate.  The same society that is racist enough to believe Bonnie Sweeten’s story was also the one that investigated the holes in that story and arrested her.  Thirty years ago, Sweeten likely would not have gotten caught.   Also, I dare say that if she were in the south, she would have gotten away with her crime with flying colors.  But the fact that there are officers who truly believe that justice is color blind gives us hope that there is a better day for our justice system in the future.

WHY ARE BLACK GIRLS SO DAMN DIFFICULT...READ ARTICLE AND POST YOUR COMMENTS BELOW!

It must suck to be a Black woman. You can’t go out to the bar without throwing a drink in someone’s face. All of your friends talk shit behind your back. You never get chosen on the Bachelor. Your boyfriend only takes you to McDonalds. Either you go to an inner city high school that’s in need of Michelle Pfeiffer to help you learn to read or you’re stuck in the suburbs as the sassy sidekick to some witty blonde. Apparently Maury Povich is the only positive male role model in your life. Oh and don’t you dare get out of line with your man because the State Farm guy is always waiting to replace you with someone a shade lighter and with less attitude. That’s how TV portrays Black women so that has to be true, right? They’re all eye rolling, church going, McNugget eating, man problem having females whose only positives seem to be the ability to dance and dress nice. Today’s special word is BULLSHIT, as in the portrayal of Black women in the media has become straight bullshit.

I was at lunch with my Jewish homie and we were talking about Black girl slander and I asked him what his impression of it was, he laughed and said, “TV makes me think that they’re all ticking time bombs waiting to yell at people“. EXACTLY! I know a variety of Black women ranging from ratchets and hoes to scholars and soccer moms, so I know how to differentiate stereotypes from the real. However, if you are a TV junkie who lives in Agora Hills and the only Black people you have experienced have names like NeNe and Fantasia you are going to have some bias when a gang of Black women walk into the restaurant. “Oh gosh, Rebecca, they’re about to start talking loud and arguing over who’s a non motherfucking factor“. TV makes it seem like Black chicks are either going to sing for America’s Votes or rip each other’s weaves out. I enjoy watching ratchet reality shows because I know that it’s mostly scripted, but most of America isn’t in on the joke. Little Black girls growing up on this shit see the house, jewelry, and clothes and think because Chrissie can punch a bitch, do no jail time, then get invited to a stripper party it’s okay for her to act a fool as well. Entertainment is one thing but there should be a balance where you can say clearly, “this woman is fighting because she’s low class but this woman is talking out her problems because she has self respect“. Where is that counter? Oprah and Michelle Obama? Nigga please, ain’t nobody under 25 relating to those deities. Since the Cosby Show went off the air Black girls have been portrayed as Ghetto Divas who are hard to love and difficult to get along with. It’s time for these misconceptions to end. Since TV won’t have a proper representation of the type of complex females I’m talking about until next year, I’m going to dispel some myths about the so-called typical Black female.

Black Girls Are Ghetto:

Bullshit

Despite what Media Take Out will have you believe, the world isn’t filled with C-section scared strippers and five-year-old girls with blonde weave. The hood is the hood, I’m not trying to pretend that ignorant people don’t exist, but not everyone comes from that. There will always be that pregnant chick rolling a blunt on her porch while her four year old is in the house cooking a Hot Pocket on a Foreman grill. But this is the 21st century and that type of thing isn’t the norm.  Yes, we all like to laugh at those kinds of people, I constantly point to ratchet behavior as proof that we can do better, but what happens when dumb ass people start to emulate that behavior because they think it’s cute? Ghettomania. The reason why it seems like every Black girl in America is ghetto isn’t because they are, it’s because the majority give into basic ass ways in an attempt to seem cool. No one wants to be labeled a hood rat, but they love to front as if they’re bout that life because the world of neck tattoos and Moscato drinking is what society promotes as fun. “You ain’t tatted up, bitch you corny” What kinda backwoods shit is that? Let me see you Tat your GPA on your neck instead of that ratchet ass nickname nobody calls you. Dude came out with a song about Wal-Mart with bitches in booty shorts, two days later I see a girl and her friend twitpic themselves at Wal-Mart in booty shorts #WallyWorld. Are you serious? Monkey see Monkey do; well let’s see all of the beautiful Black women who run through Rodeo Drive not Wal-Mart. Can we get an interview with the sexy girls who direct the music videos not just the one’s shaking their ass in the video? Let’s talk about the ones who graduate from Ivy League universities not just the ones who stab each other in dorm rooms. We live in a society where they love when girls talk like Monique and are quick to call a chick an Oreo if she dares to enunciate her words without an accent. There are always two sides to a coin, but I guess if it doesn’t perpetuate a stereotype then it’s not worth seeing.

Black Girls Are Gold Diggers:

Bullshit

Contrary to popular belief, most Black women will choose love over a bank account, but if I listen to the media, every one of them turns into a hoe once Derwin Davis steps in the room. A lot of women end up with guys who will never break six figures a year, yet this glorification of the big booty girl with long fingernails proclaiming, “Girl, I gotta get me a baller” is embedded in Pop Culture. Tell me how many Black women have fucked their way onto the E channel? How much money has Hugh Hefner tricked on darkskin girls? Karrine Steffans had to suck hundreds of dicks just to sell a book, Kendra sucked one wrinkled dick and she became a brand. Let’s be serious. No woman wants to fall in love with a broke nigga, going after a guy who is financially competent doesn’t make you a gold digger that makes you normal. You should look at the kind of car he’s driving and what type of job he has, no girl wants to get sidetracked by a guy who can’t take her places. But If you add up all the successful gold diggers in Los Angeles and put them in the Staples Center, I’m Magic Johnson positive that Black girls won’t make up 10% of that room.

Black Girls Love Tyler Perry:

Bullshit

Family Guy had a great exchange between Lois and Cleveland’s Wife Donna.
Lois: Why does Laura Linney always look like she’s just finished skiing?
Donna:
I don’t know who that is.
Louis:
Really? The Big C?
Donna:
No, never heard of her.
Louis:
Would you know who she was if I said Tyler Perry’s Laura Linney?
Donna:
Ooh, I love her!!!
The truth of the matter is Black women go see his movies because there is NO alternative. Try picking out the Black girls in a typical Romantic Comedy and you’ll be left with the Sassy Mail Lady, the Sassy Waitress, or the token Black bff who they threw in for diversity… who’s also sassy. Emma Stone is cute and all but Black chicks aren’t relating to “Easy A”. It’s not that they love the mess Tyler Perry puts out; they just want to see characters that look like them on the big screen who aren’t secondary.

Black Girls Are Self Righteous:

Bullshit

There is this “oh god, let’s hear what the Black women are going to complain about now” mentality that people have as if they all chase controversy like Al Sharpton. I think this comes from the media coverage of C. Delores Tucker laughably fighting against 2pac’s use of the word “bitch” as if she were Rosa Parks fighting for civil rights. That was a case of the old generation not understanding how the new generation expresses themselves, not Black women being easily offended. Black women of the past few generations are the most understanding group of people in the world. The reason it seems like they are so easily offended is because like anything, those who are upset make the MOST noise. When Nelly’s Tip Drill video came under fire, it wasn’t every Black girl in America who was screaming bloody murder, it was a small percentage made up of overly sensitive people who had clout. I’ve never in my life talked to a woman who was upset about Tip Drill. There are a lot of things that disrespect Black women, Dutch Magazines, McDonalds commercials, the phrase “can I touch your hair“, but a music video full of paid women having fun is not on the list. There will always be two schools of thoughts conservative and liberal. Conservatives would see Black Girls Are Easy and ignorantly dismiss it based off a title they think they understand, and then there are the liberals who read and analyze before jumping to conclusions. It’s safe to say the liberals won.

Black Girls Have Attitudes: BULLSHIT

Why is the woman in the Statefarm Ad yelling = her boyfriend. Why is Yvette in Baby Boy yelling = Jody. Why does NeNe need money to make her feel confident = An abusive husband. Show me a damaged woman and I’ll show you a man who damaged her ass, be it her Daddy or a boyfriend. With all these jokes about Black Girl Attitude, no one ever looks to the source of why she’s rolling her eyes and cocking her head in disgust. She’s mad because she’s been done wrong. I’ve seen it with my own eyes how a girl who was so nice in high school is now jaded and fussy. What happened to her? People who come back from The War aren’t the same, and love is Vietnam. When a woman is cheated on, toyed with, or constantly lied to; that shit strips her of that innocence and corrodes her patience. I’ve experienced a lot of women who have chips on their shoulders and they took it out on me, even though I wasn’t to blame. Regardless of race, all women who have been hurt have those kinds of walls up; Black girls just express it in a certain way. If she’s blowing up over small shit, then best believe there are bigger issues at hand. In the words of Drizzy, “Who’s paying for all that therapy, um nigga not me“. We as men should not be made to pay for what the guy before us did to her, but we shouldn’t be so quick to add fuel to the fire either. Instead of helping her deal with those anger issues or giving her a shoulder to cry on, most of us just get her to drop her guard long enough to smash, then bounce because we don’t want to deal with her crazy ass. Imagine that happening to you several times? That’s the reason Black women rage against the machine known as mankind because a large percentage have been cut open, stitched up, then had those stitches ripped out again. By the time she meets a guy who could be Mr. Right, she’s hiding behind her attitude because that’s the only defense mechanism she has left. The perception that Black girls are hard to get along with or ticking time bombs is propaganda. If you treat a Black woman right and take time to understand her, Black girls aren’t any more difficult than any other women, in fact, Black girls are easy.

DEEJAYS LEARN YOUR HISTORY...GRAND WIZARD THEODORE INTERVIEW!

Grand Wizzard Theodore Part 1 from The Cut on Vimeo.

Grand Wizzard Theodore Part 2 from The Cut on Vimeo.

One of early hip-hop's most skilled DJs, Grand Wizard Theodore is universally acknowledged as the inventor of the scratch. Grandmaster Flash pioneered many early turntable techniques, including "cutting" records (manually cueing up duplicate copies of the same record in order to play the same passage, cutting back and forth between them), but it was the young Theodore who built on Flash's work by taking the scratching sound made when the records were cued, and adding a rhythm that made the turntable into a percussion instrument the DJ could "play." Theodore is also credited with pioneering the needle drop, a technique where, instead of cueing up the record silently, the DJ simply drops the needle onto the exact start of the passage to be played. Grand Wizard Theodore was born Theodore Livingstone and grew up in the Bronx. His older brothers Gene and Claudio were an early hip-hop duo called the L-Brothers, and they frequently collaborated with Grandmaster Flash. Flash discovered that young Theodore (not even a teenager yet) had a natural affinity for the turntables, and when Flash spun records in public parks, he would sometimes set up a milk crate to let Theodore DJ. According to legend, Theodore invented scratching largely by accident, circa 1977 (when he was about 13 or 14); holed up in his bedroom playing records, Theodore had to pause to hear his mother scold him about the volume, and happened to move one of the records back and forth. He liked the sound and played with it often, developing the technique until it was ready for public performance. Flash picked up on it quickly, and Theodore in turn began copying Flash's acrobatic record-spinning tricks (using his elbows, feet, etc.). By the time the '80s rolled around, Grand Wizard Theodore was one of the top DJs in New York. He hooked up with a crew that was most often billed as Grand Wizard Theodore and the Fantastic 5 MCs, which released the cult classic single "Can I Get a Soul Clap" in 1980 on the Tuff City label. The group never recorded a proper album, but they did appear in the 1983 old school hip-hop film Wild Style (which later became a cult classic); they recorded several songs on the soundtrack and appeared in an MC battle sequence with their chief rivals the Cold Crush Brothers. While Grand Wizard Theodore never received the same wide acclaim as Grandmaster Flash during his career, he was eventually rediscovered by hip-hop historians, which helped him land some international DJ gigs in the '90s. He also appeared at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 1999 hip-hop conference, and teaches advanced classes in the art of DJing. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

NUMBER LIES: WHO'S NOT WORTHY OF YOUR SEX COUNT?

How do people decide who to include in their body count? Does it depend on how good or bad the sex was? What kind of sex it was? According to AskMen:
When people are speaking casually, the phrase “had sex” can mean virtually anything. A Kinsey Institute study asked 486 participants a series of questions, all beginning with the prompt “Would you say you ‘had sex’ with someone if…” before describing some intimate behavior. Nineteen percent of respondents thought that anal sex fell outside the definition of sex, and about 28% thought oral sex didn’t qualify. Eleven percent of respondents thought that typical intercourse didn’t count as sex if there was no ejaculation. Five percent of people didn’t identify typical intercourse as sex at all.
Now I’m wondering, if there are people who don’t consider typical intercourse as sex, then what do they consider sex? Have you lied about your number of sex partners before? What was it about certain ones that made you leave them out of the number? What sex acts don’t you consider worthy of adding to your count?

FLAVOR FLAV’S DAUGHTER ARRESTED AFTER FAMILY FIGHT!

January 30, 2012

If you have a sister you can’t stand because she stays in your closet all the time, a cousin you think is trife because he owes you $20 yet keeps buying Chick-fil-A while you’re eating dollar menu McDonalds, or a son you wanna donate to the military, take comfort in one thing: At least the kinfolk didn’t go upside your head.

Such is the reality for Flavor Flav’s flock. It was reported that his 19-year-old daughter Dazayna got into an argument with one of his stepson’s. The argument turned physical and when Flav tried to break it up, his daughter hit him. No word on whether or not it was intentional, but I have to say with a name like Dazayna it could go either way.
Police were called to Flav’s home and after interviewing the family there was evidence of domestic violence. As a result, Dazayna was taken in for misdemeanor battery. That’s unfortunate because with a name like that her resume already smells like fried pig feet to human resources; the last thing she needs is to have a record, too.

BUFFETS RESTAURANTS SEEKS BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION!

EAGEN, Del. (AP) — Buffets Restaurants Holdings Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time and plans to shut 81 underperforming restaurants as it tries to cope with its debt.
The company, based in Eagan, Minn., operates 494 restaurants in 38 states under names such as Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan's and Tahoe Joe's Famous Steakhouse restaurant.
Buffets said that its decision to file on Wednesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware marks the beginning of a new era for the company and is the result strategic review that the company's board began in May.
The company said that investors who hold 83 percent of its senior debt have agreed to a restructuring that will eliminate nearly all of its $245 million in debt in exchange for all the equity in the company. That would free up cash flow for the company to invest in improving its restaurants.
Buffets said it expects to emerge from bankruptcy within six months. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2008 as it struggled with debt and the impact of the recession on consumers.
Buffets is one of several restaurant chains that has struggled over the past few years as consumers to cut back on their spending and begun eating at home more often. Restaurant companies such as Friendly's Ice Cream Corp., Perkins & Marie Callender's, Real Mex and the SSI Group Holding Corp., which operates Souper Salad and Grandy's restaurants, have all filed for bankruptcy protection in recent years.
Buffets said it has secured a $50 million debtor-in-possession loan that, along with cash, will allow it to meet its normal operating costs during the restructuring process.
Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and Young, Conaway, Stargatt & Taylor LLP are the company's legal advisors. The company's financial adviser is Moelis Inc.

Feds Bust Five Bonanno Family Mobsters, Including 'Donnie Brasco' Underboss

012712kirby.jpg
(Bruno Kirby, who played "Nicky Mouth" Santora in Donnie Brasco)
A joint investigation between the DEA and FBI culminated this morning with the arrest of five high-ranking members of the Bonanno crime family, officials announced. The five alleged gangsters include "made" Bonanno member Vincent Badalamenti, a.k.a. “Vinny TV, and Nicholas "Nicky Mouth" Santora, who previously did 15 years in prison after undercover FBI agent Joseph Pistone—dubbed "Donnie Brasco"—infiltrated the family by posing as a gangster in the late 1970s. In the movie about that investigation, Santora (played by Bruno Kirby) was killed; in real life he was released from prison in 2009, and now it looks like he's going back. Also arrested were Bonanno crime family members Anthony "TG" Graziano, alleged captain Vito Balsamo, and alleged foot soldier Anthony Calabrese. Investigators say they caught Graziano on tape when he was in prison telling an informant to get money from an extortion victim and “open him up" in necessary. As it happens, the recording was made by DEA informant Hector Pagan, who is the boyfriend of "Mob Wives" star Renee Graziano—TG is her father and Pagan wore a wire to record the conversations.
A Gambino crime family associate, James LaForte, was also arrested in the early morning raids. According to the FBI press release, the evidence reveals "a pattern of violence and intimidation employed by the defendants to further their enterprise’s economic interests, including Badalamenti allegedly directing the hostile takeover of a bar located on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn, as a result of its owner’s failure to repay a debt owed to Badalamenti." Charges include racketeering, extortion, illegal gambling, conspiring to distribute marijuana, and refusing to remove their shoes in a Japanese restaurant.

FILESHARING SITE "FILESONIC" DISABLES FILE SHARING IN WAKE OF MEGAUPLOAD ARREST!

Some filesharing sites are reining in their services in the aftermath of the recent high-profile shutdown of Megaupload. FileSonic has disabled all file sharing functionality on its website, restricting access so that users may only download their own files.
Megaupload was a popular file locker service that allowed users to upload files and share them with other users. The FBI pulled the plug on the Megaupload website last week when seven of the company's top personnel were charged with conspiracy. The 72-page indictment claims that Megaupload willfully distributed pirated movies and other copyright-infringing content.
The law enforcement effort against Megaupload, which was carried out in collaboration with authorities from several countries, has raised questions about whether competing services could face a similar fate. Amid the climate of legal ambiguity, various file locker services have responded in different ways.
RapidShare, which is one of the leading file locker providers, told us last week that they aren't concerned about a raid. According to RapidShare, legitimate hosting providers have nothing to fear—as long as they comply with requests from rightsholders and don't turn a blind eye to piracy conducted with their service.
FileSonic, which is another leading file locker provider, is apparently approaching the matter differently. The company disabled its sharing services entirely, potentially reducing its exposure to legal risk. The content hosted by FileSonic is no longer generally accessible to download. Users can only download files that they have uploaded themselves.
It's worth noting that FileSonic, like RapidShare, already has strong procedures in place to combat piracy. FileSonic uses digital fingerprinting technology from a content identification firm called Vobile to detect copyrighted material on its network and prohibit unauthorized sharing.
FileSonic also responds to takedown requests issued under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by removing pirated content and blocking users who repeatedly infringe. The company has a designated DMCA agent and provides instructions for submitting a claim. They also allow individual users to report abuse.
Despite all of these precautions against piracy, FileSonic is going a step further by disabling its sharing functionality in entirety. When a user attempts to access content that is hosted on FileSonic, the site will display a message which explains that sharing has been discontinued and that only the original uploader can access the file. The company has not yet issued a full statement regarding the change in service.
FileSonic's decision to voluntarily discontinue its sharing services will likely be welcomed by content industry trade groups, who will undoubtedly view it as evidence that the Megaupload shutdown is generating a deterrent effect. In light of FileSonic's active efforts to comply with the DMCA and proactively police its own network, however, it also raises the question of whether law enforcement activity against Megaupload is having an unintended chilling effect on legitimate hosting services.

TWITTER TO SELECTIVELY 'CENSOR' TWEETS BY COUNTRY

Twitter has announced that it now has the technology to selectively block tweets on a country by country basis.

In its blog, Twitter said it could "reactively withhold content from users in a specific country".
But it said the removed content would be available to the rest of the world. Previously when Twitter deleted a tweet, it would disappear worldwide.
The move comes at a time when the company is in the process of expanding its global business.
In its blog post, Twitter explained that its international growth meant entering countries "that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression", citing France or Germany which ban pro-Nazi content as examples.
"Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country - while keeping it available in the rest of the world," the company said in a blog post titled Tweets Must Flow.
"We haven't yet used this ability, but if and when we are required to withhold a tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld," it added.
A number of Twitter users have expressed dismay over the move, with some pointing out the adverse impact it would have on free speech, especially outside the US.
Twitter, along with other social networking sites like Facebook, has played a vital - if disputed - role in organising everything from the Arab Spring to the London riots in 2011, according to the BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones.
However, the micro-blogging service - which said it had more than 100 million active users as of September 2011 - has also had to balance local laws with free speech in the process.
The blog statement acknowledged that Twitter would not be able to operate in all countries, saying: "Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there."
Twitter is blocked in China, where microblogging alternatives known as Weibo have surged in popularity in the past year.
